See http://www.newforestshow.co.uk/ for more details. On a much smaller scale Milford-on-Sea Carnival is a charming village event which goes on all afternoon and evening with entertainment on the village green, a fete, tug- of -war and other side shows, all put on by local people. You may wonder why I have included the Cowes Sailing Regatta. My caravan at Hurst View is only a few minutes walk from the Pennington sea wall and footpath to Keyhaven and Hurst. Well from Hurst Spit or from the footpath along the Pennington sea wall you can get a good view of the sailing boats in the Solent. Many impressive yachts are moored at Lymington during Cowes week, and you can take a boat trip from Lymington to see the Friday night firework display off Cowes sea front. Or you can watch it for free at Calshot or Lepe beach. You can take a Wagon Ride through the Forest, either from Brockenhurst - tel 01344 627722, or from Burley - tel 07786371843. Or travel further afield with the NF Horsedrawn Omnibus Company - tel 07852 208048, or www.thenewforest.co.uk/tourbus.html Or if you fancy taking to the water try Puffin Cruises - tel 07850 947618, and take a variety of boat trips around the Solent or to the Isle of Wight. And if you want to be more hands on you can hire a boat from Christchurch Quay and go up or down river. If you cannot bring your own bicycles you can hire them on site in high season, or from Brockenhurst, http://www.countrylanes.co.uk/ and cycle down the lane from my caravan www.cogb.com/lymington and along the cycle path to Keyhaven or Milford-on-Sea, or to Lymington or through the many other cycle ways around the New Forest.

Lymington Sea Water Baths

Lymington open air Swimming pool near Lymington Marina

The Lymington Sea water Baths were opened in the 1780's, and are the largest on the south coast. They were originally privately owned, and capitalised on the 19th century public health interest in sea water and mud. In 1895 there was even archery and a 12 hole golf course here, but this was closed in the Second World War. They have been in public ownership since 1929 and the Lymington Town council normally open them from May to September. During the school summer holidays local children and holiday makers alike enjoy this popular facility.

If you holiday in the New Forest, in my caravan near Lymington - www.cogb.com/lymington you will be pleased to hear that there are also many lovely beaches nearby where you can enjoy the benefits of salt water bathing, and a public indoor swimming pool at Pennington, just up the road.

Visit Milford on Sea Food Week on your caravan holiday in Lymington

Milford-on Sea Food Week from Easter Monday to Sunday 10 April. When you are staying in my holiday caravan you will certainly wish to visit Lymington Street Market and find yourself some bargain buys. Part of the High Street is closed every Saturday so shoppers can wander among the many stalls, selling clothes, antiques, food, jewellery and much more. And after you have visited the market just continue to the bottom of the High Street to the pretty cobbled path which leads down to the town quay. There are interesting shops, pubs and restaurants here too. There are other markets in the New Forest, at Ringwood, Highcliffe and Christchurch, but why go further afield. When you stay in my holiday caravan www.cogb.com/lymington it is only a few minutes drive into the centre of Lymington.

Explore the history of the New Forest on your caravan holiday

The New Forest was created in 1079 by William 1, known as William the Conqueror, as a hunting area, primarily for deer. It became famous in August 1100 when Sir Walter Tyrell killed King William Rufas near Minstead in the New Forest in a hunting accident. A stone marks the exact spot. The ancient rural practice of commoners grazing rights has survived to this day, and ponies, cattle, pigs and donkeys can still be seen roaming free in the forest. Over the years the New Forest has provided much timber for the Crown, and for the Navy. In the 18C much of Nelsons fleet was built at Bucklers Hard from New Forest timber. In nearby Beaulieu is the 13C Abbey, which was partly destroyed in the 15C. In the first and second world wars there was heavy felling of timber, much of which has been replaced by conifer plantations.

Visit Breamore House near Fordingbridge, a 1583 Elizabethan Manor House with art, furniture and tapestries, and also Breamore Country Museum. Near here is Rockbourne Roman Villa, which is over 1600 years old. Another interesting place to visit is Eling Tide Mill, which was restored in 1980 and is the only tide mill in the world still regularly producing flour. The Totton and Eling Heritage Centre is also here. Then there is Hurst Castle built by Heny VIII, which is a walk or ferry ride from Keyhaven. And just up the road from my holiday caravan, in Lymington, is the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery. Most people come to the New Forest for the scenery, beaches, walking, fishing, birdwatching and wildlife but it has so much more to offer. So enjoy your holiday in my caravan www.cogb.com/lymington

What can a caravan holiday in the New Forest offer?

If you holiday in my caravan at Hurst View, near Lymington, in the New Forest you will enjoy all the comforts of home, in a lovely rural environment, with beautiful scenery and opportunities to see many different species of birds, animals and other wildlife on your doorstep. Lymington is in a perfect location for the beaches of the south coast, but is only a short drive from Lyndhurst, where the Visitor Information Centre will tell you about nearby wild life watching locations, with walks along marked trails - there are many, including a deer watch trail and a reptile trail. If you want to see many more of the different wild animals which live in Hampshire, just a couple of miles from Lyndhurst is the New Forest Otter.Owl and Wildlife Park at Longdown, Marchwood. Here you can see badgers, polecats, mink, foxes, deer, wild boar and many more European native animals. Or go to Rhinefield Ornamental drive, which starts a couple of miles out of Brockenhurst. Here you are sure to see some of the three species of deer which live wild in the New Forest, as well as spectacular old giant redwood trees. And as you drive around the New Forest dont forget to keep your eyes open for the New Forest ponies which roam free throughout the forest and heathland.

Of course there are many other things to do other than walking, fishing in the lakes and ponds or in the sea, birdwatching and wild life spotting - there is Paultons Park with its exciting rides for the children, and the stately home of Lord Montague at Beaulieu, where there is the famous motor museum. You can take boat trips from Keyhaven, Lymington and Christchurch, or even a ferry to the Isle of Wight. There is so much to do in this area that you will want to come back to my caravan, www.cogb.com/lymington for holidays time and again.

Lymington - home to some of the best Pubs and Restuarants in the New Forest

My caravan has a fully fitted kitchen, but my guess is, as you are on holiday, you will sometimes want to eat out. You have plenty of choice in and around Lymington, whether you want a snack, a pub lunch or a special meal. If you want to enjoy great views as well as good food try The Mayflower, by the marina which has a large garden with Solent views, or the Ship Inn on the town quay, which has a terrace with river views and has recently been refurbished. The Angel Hotel on the High Street is a 13th century coaching inn and has a bar, restuarant and pretty patio. Whether you just want to pop in for a coffee or share a bottle of wine with a snack or full meal there are many pubs, cafes, and restuarants offering different cuisines, including Indian and Italian food. And the New Forest has many historic pubs in the pretty villages around Lymington. If you really want to splash out try The Mill at Gordleton, just 2 miles out of Lymington. This ivy clad 17th century Mill is situated on Avon water and is famous for fine dining. But my personal favourite is just a 10-15 minute walk from my holiday caravan - The Chequers. This 16th century pub and restuarant is the haunt of many famous yachtsmen, and serves good food and draught beers in the flagstoned bar, the cosy restuarant or the beautiful garden and terraces. Enjoy all this when you stay in my holiday caravan www.cogb.com/lymington

Places to go on your Caravan Holiday New Forest

The surrounding countryside is very picturesque with views of the Isle of Wight. Visit Exbury Gardens, Hilliers Arboretum, Rhinefield Ornimental Drive and the many other places where you can enjoy the beauty of the trees as they change colour. And the south coast, particularly Keyhaven and Pennington Marshes are a great place to see migrating birds at this time of year. Of course a holiday out of season is also much cheaper, so email or phone me for prices and availability and treat yourself to a late holiday. This is the largest pond in the New Forest, covering 6.7 hectares. It originates from the 18th Century, when it provided the water power for the nearby Hatchet Mill, an Iron Mill which is now a private house. The pond is very popular as a picnic area where families enjoy feeding the ducks and swans, and can buy an ice cream from the van which is usually parked here throughout the summer. There is ample parking and public conveniences. There is a model aircraft flying area on Hatchet Moor nearby. And from Mid june to mid March Hatchet Pond it is a favourite spot for course fishing - roach, bream, tench, carp, pike, eel, and rudd have all been caught here. And it is a very romantic spot to watch the sunset. Just one of the many beautiful places you can enjoy when you stay in my holiday caravan www.cogb.com/lymington

Bird Watching at Hurst, Pennington and Oxey Marshes

Between the Lymington River and Keyhaven, with its seaward boundary the Solent Way footpath, this area is part owned by HCC aided by the Wildlife Trust. It was an important area for salt extraction until the 1850's and in the past was a popular area for wildfowling and the collection of winkles and oysters. Gravel extraction has also taken place here making it an interesting area for wild life. The intertidal habitat is made up of mud flats with seaweed and eel grass, and saltmarsh of glass wort and cad grass. Sea campion, thrift and the rare golden samphire grow along the shingle. In the spring wild daffodils cover the drier grassland just a few yards inland from the coastal path.

The habitat attracts high tide waders such as red shank, ring plover, oystercatcher, dunlin and curlew. Plovers and avocet are also seen here. In the past 15 years the little egret has become a common sight and brent geese are regular winter visitors, together with the more common canada geese. Other wild fowl seen are mallard, widgeon, red pintail, shoveler, shell duck, gadwell and the red breasted merganser. In colder weather the smew, goosander and occasional grey goose can also be seen. There are also divers and grebes and the rare white billed diver was once recorded here.

Also to be seen are passage birds - wagtails, pippets and dartford warblers, and numerous raptors - the peregrine, merlin, hobby, and hen and marsh harriers.

All this is just a short walk from my holiday caravan at Hurst view www.cogb.com/lymington.

Pictures copyright and courtesy of Henry Szwinto at www.szwinto.com

Visit Beaulieu and Bucklers Hard from your New Forest holiday Caravan

Just 12 miles from my holiday caravan www.cogb.com/lymington is the village of Beaulieu, named from the french for beautiful place, and it truly lives up to its name. You can see the Tide mill, above left, which is being restored. Visit the 14C Palace house, the Abbey ruins, which date from 1204, and the famous Lord Montague's Motor museum, which houses Donald Cambells Bluebell, a Bond car, and many other famous vehicles. Just 2 miles from here along the Beaulieu river is the unspoilt village of Bucklers Hard. It was here that many of the ships in Lord Nelsons fleet were built from New Forest timber. You can take a river cruise or a woodland walk along the river. Or get refreshments in the Master Builders Public House or Hotel Restuarant. The village houses, above right, date from the 18C and are mostly unchanged. Some are open to the public.

These are just two of the many lovely and interesting places you can visit when you stay in my holiday caravan.

Where in the New Forest is my holiday caravan?

Lymington

The New Forest is a very varied environment, from the heathland of the north west of the National Park to the dense Forest around the central area of Lyndhurst, and my favourite part, the south east coastal area around Lymington. With its pretty villages, smaller heathland spaces, mixed deciduous forest, river estuaries and beautiful coast this has to be the place to stay. So we start at the historic Hampshire town of Lymington. Explore the cobbled street down to the quay, and the many old pubs, shops and top class restuarants. Visit the Saturday street market. Lymington does not have a beach but the large open air sea water swimming pool overlooks the marina, with its impressive yachts, many owned by the rich and famous. And the beach at Milford on Sea is only a few miles away. There is a Railway and a Bus Station, and for about £5 you can take a taxi from either to my holiday caravan on the outskirts of Lymington. However you may prefer to drive so that you can explore the whole area properly, so leave Lymington in the direction of Milford on Sea. You turn left at the first roundabout, then immediately right into Lower Pennington Lane. If you look at my map http://tinyurl.com/c2shmm you will see that the caravan park is at the end of the lane surrounded by fields and open countryside. You can see the Solent and the Isle of Wight from here. There is a small harbour, a sailing club and a country pub, The Gun, where you can get excellent food and drink. Sit in the garden in the summer or in the conservatory or by the fire on colder days. The more energetic of you can continue on to the Shingle bank and the to Hurst Castle, built by Henry VIII, or Milford beach.
